5 Pratical Tips for Living Green in a Hi-Tech World
written by: Patrick Wong | category: Gadgets | posted: 03/20/08Technology makes our life easier but it harms the world in many ways. Every year, tons of electronic waste gets dumped and many of them produced toxic chemicals to the earth. Here’s 5 ways you can do to save the world.
1. Take it back
The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. offers a free service for recycling household and rechargeable batteries. Drop-off locations include A & B Sound, Canadian Tire, Future Shop, London Drugs, Mountain Equipment Co-op and RadioShack; for the complete list, visit www.rbrc.org. Ikea also offers a free battery recycling service; simply take your batteries to one of its locations.
2. Set your old computer free
Give your old computer equipment to an outfit that will refurbish it and donate it to a charitable organization. The federal government’s Computers for Schools program, Free Geek Vancouver and Electronic Recycling Association are three non-profit programs that accept equipment free of charge.
3. Go High-Tech
Setting up a meeting? Get your IT person to set up a laptop and projector, so you can project your documents onto a screen, instead of distributing piles of handouts. If anyone wants a copy of their own, tell them you’ll email it to them, and they can store it on their hard drive.
4. Ditch the disposables
Buying disposable razors and tossing one every week can put a burden on your wallet and on the planet. The next time you run out of disposables, consider switching to razors that let you reuse the handle and replace just the blade. Better yet, consider buying an electric razor with a rechargeable battery that can last for years and save a few bucks.
5. Get in on the download
Need the newest vibes from your favourite artist? Rather than buying a CD that’s hermetically sealed in plastic, buy your music online and download it to your computer, cellphone or MP3 plater. Sites such as www.napster.ca, www.emusic.com, www.beatport.com, www.traxsource.com and the famous www.itunes.com from Apple.
