Macworld: iTunes $3.99 movie rental per 24hr period!

Apple are about to announce movie rentals via their iTunes download service for only $3.99 per 24hr period, according to “people familiar” with the company’s media plans. The service includes content from existing partner such as Walt Disney Co., Paramount and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp, as well as new additions Warner Bros. and Fox. New and old movie titles will be available for rental with further emphasis placed on the Apple TV as a conduit between Mac and TV. This sounds like a Super Deal for movie fans out there! How many movies can you watch in 24 hour time frame?

That’s a terrible deal. Several reasons:

    1) Buying an episode of a television show is $2, and you keep it forever.
    2) Renting at Blockbuster or some other place will cost about $4, and you get to keep it at least 10 days. 3 (new releases) + 7 day grace period.
    3) If you can pay 4 bucks for a movie, you might as well scrounge up another 16 dollars and pay $20 a month for unlimited movies with blockbuster online or Netflix. Also, if you get blockbuster Online they give you coupons for free rentals, twice a month.
    4) You basically have to watch it right away. I am sure there’s going to be a bunch of people who complain about this. You can’t watch some, leave it for tomorrow, and then come back and finish it.

I understand that regular DVDs are 10-15 dollars, but $4 for something you barely even get to keep, especially when rental stores do it better, isn’t a good deal. It’s just stupid.

    Oh, two more.

    5) Downloading a .7 to 2 gig movie will take like an hour in itself.
    6) Netflix also offers streaming video.
